Oh I love love love this! You're so right. The desperate plea out loud IMMEDIATELY bonds me to the character. Having a character pray out loud is so effective because it tells a story without being preachy - it's just real. Thanks for this!

Just sharing that I’m going to use this technique in a short story with two teen female leads that come from completely different worlds, and I can’t wait to see how it plays out. I used this technique in one of my books (Ten Thousand Tries) when our protagonist, Golden, looks up at the sky and pleads for his dad's life - and also to win his middle school soccer championship. He gets this idea because his great soccer hero, Messi, always looks up at the sky and points after he makes a goal. Messi has talked about how he's giving thanks to God, but also his mother (Celia Maria Cuccittini ) of whom he has a large tattoo on his back. Golden takes inspiration!
